Honduras Trip 2007

Sister Parish
Here is one of the Maryknoll priests, Fr. Chuk, celebrating Mass on Sunday at Santisima Trinidad, our sister parish. We stayed in a dorm room at the mission chapel of San José. The parish of Santisima Trinidad has a total of 14 mission chapels, of which one is named San Juan Bautista (like our own St. John the Baptist in Port Orford).
Casa La Bomba
We were finishing four houses near the city water pump (la bomba) that pumps clean water to the rich in San Pedro Sula, while the poor in this ghetto of Chamelecon pay to drink dirty water.
Women Work Hard
Fr. Tom is trying to teach the macho culture of Honduras that women can work too. Here we are spackling and beautifying their homes.
Kids Work Hard Too
Fr. Tom is not enlisting child labor . . . they beg to get a shovel, and dig right in! These kids work hard, which is better than them just walking the streets unattended and starving. Few of them had shoes.
Fr. Heiko Works Too
I'm usually behind the camera, but here is a picture of me working too.
Electricians are worth Gold!
Tim is an electrician from Brookings. He fixed up many houses with electricity, and repaired many more. Here he is working with Rogelio in Fr. Tom's house that he shares with several students. Luis Monge is one of the four that gets to study at a good Catholic High School. Tim would like to return and do a workshop on electric wiring.
Beans & Rice
Here is our wonderful kitchen crew that served us all our meals. They do this year round for the workers who build houses in the 'Caminando por la Paz' program. We had rice, beans, tortillas and usually one other food for breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Interviewed Scholarship Families
Isis & I interviewed many of the families in the scholarship program. Many of these families have serious problems at home. Many of the children are being raised by aunts, grandparents, or even just neighbors after they were abandoned as babies.
Meeting with Public School Parents
We held a meeting with all the parents of the children in our public school scholarship program. Most of them showed up . . . on Honduras time.
Catholic School Parents
We also met with the Catholic School children we sponsor, and their parents (parents are sitting at other table).
Lempira Celebration at Catholic School
We visited the Catholic Elementary School, San Diego de Alcala, where 11 of our children study. It was the holiday of their national hero, Lempira, a native Honduran who revolted against the Spanish Conquest.
Scholarship Team
Here is Fr. Heiko, Isis, and Tim (with Gladis) who make up the core of the scholarship coordination team. (not pictured are Fr. Tom, Ernestina, Lila & Kathy Cowan who are also in the core of the team).
Kathy Lingle with Supplies
Kathy collected all the supplies we brought, and organized them for distribution. Here is one bed full.
Henry Died Last May
Henry Aguilar is pictured here with his wife Maribel & new daughter Genesis in this 2006 photo. I learned from the Catholic Sentinel that he was killed in May. Many of us grew very close to Henry, who left the gangs, and became very involved with the Church, and the program.
Henry Died Here
Three masked men entered his compound, and broke into the house as Henry was showering here (getting ready to be a reader at Mass). Nobody wants to live in this home anymore. We are tearing out this shower, and restroom, and converting it to an exterior deck, while constructing a new restroom outside his house (next photo).
New Restroom at Henry's House
Here is Suzie, Israel, Kathy & Emma standing in front of the new restroom we are constructing at Henry's house.
